How To Clean & Wash Faux Fur: Coats, Jackets & More | The Laundress

If you're like us, you can't wait to pull out your faux fur fashion for wearing all fall and winter long. What happens when something lands on your favorite faux fur vest or your beanie's furry accents? Then you need to know how to wash faux fur. Good news! Faux fur, teddy bear jackets, coats and fluffy jackets are typically constructed with acrylic, mod-acrylic, nylon, rayon, and polyester – all of which are washable fabrics. You can identify a garment made with faux fur by referencing the sewn-in care label or noting the following distinctions: a woven or knitted backside, thick pile if medium to long length pile, and flexible and lightweight.
Follow this how-to, and keep your washable and non-washable faux fur looking new for years.
Gather these tools:
Stain Solution, Wash & Stain Bar, Scented Vinegar, Wool & Cashmere Shampoo, and Mesh Washing Bag
PRETREAT
Treat stains with the Stain Solution or the Wash & Stain Bar by applying directly to spots and susceptible areas like underarms. Use the Stain Solution for protein and tannin stains such as wine, coffee, ink, grass, urine, blood, and old, set-in stains like pit stains. Use the Wash & Stain Bar to remove dirt, grease, oil, and makeup.
To remove odors, presoak the item in tepid water mixed with 1/4 cup of the Scented Vinegar for up to 30 minutes.
WASH
Handwashing is always the best and safest method for washing faux fur and fur-like items. Add 2 capfuls or a squirt of the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo to a washbasin or sink filled with cool water. Submerge the item and gently agitate the water with your hands to evenly distribute soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes. Rinse well by running cool water through item until water is no longer soapy. Do not wring. Instead, press the water out of the item.
If laundering in the washing machine, place the item in the Mesh Bag. Select the delicate cycle on the washing machine and make sure the water temperature is cold and the spin is on low. Add the appropriate amount of the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo according to the machine and load size.
DRY & FINISH
Lay item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or hang to dry. Do not put in the dryer!
Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and fluff the fibers.
To remove wrinkles, steam for the best and safest finish. Do not iron.
Freshen between wearing and washing with a spritz of the Wool & Cashmere Spray.
*Note: we do not recommend using this process to wash real fur. Fur with skin and vintage fur must be taken to a professional. Fur that is knitted and does not have skin can be spot treated using the Wash & Stain Bar after a water test is conducted in a small, unnoticeable area of the item.
