How Apple Can Fight Fake News With Texture Acquisition

Earlier this month, I highlighted the challenges Apple has in acquiring video content and developing original programming given the potent contest from Netflix and Amazon. I did not mention Texture at the time as I was mainly focusing on video, but I was not surprised when Apple announced at SXSW that it would acquire the company, known every bit "Netflix of magazines."

OpinionsTexture has already washed the kind of leg work to give Apple an edge in the world of magazine publishing. I have used it since it kickoff came to market; it offers access to more than than 200 magazines for $9.99 a month. While I subscribe to only 20 pct of what is available, the magazines I exercise get are of real involvement to me.

As a serious foodie, I subscribe to all nutrient magazines, equally well as two specialty mags on diabetes that I read religiously. I subscribe to a couple of car magazines to keep up with another area of interest and download most tech and concern pubs such as PC Magazine, Fast Company, Bloomberg Businessweek, MacWorld, Wired and Fortune. I also subscribe to news and commentary magazines like Time, The New Yorker and The Atlantic, and a few sports mags such every bit ESPN and Golf Magazine.

On Texture, I experience like I'm in a "safe zone" of high-quality journalism. I have much more than trust in what I read there than I practice in items posted on Facebook and Twitter, where and then much of information technology is "fake news." Apple probable purchased Texture to get a bigger player in the publishing business, but if Apple can command the quality of Texture'southward magazine offerings, information technology volition have another striking on its hands.

I think information technology also lays out a potential new business model for publishers that want to signal to readers that they are a trusted source. For instance, I would dear a special publication that aggregates content on diabetes. I spend a lot of fourth dimension on Google searching out manufactures on the topic. While some are scholastic and well researched, many are not tied to serious medical research and is more opinion, in an area where trusted research is more important to meeting my wellness needs.

I sense Apple tree is on to something more than important than just adding another source of content to its service offerings. Go along an heart on this acquisition.
